Goya and Toffifee
The "goyafüralle" series of artwork combines assemblage and painting. An assemblage of plastic waste, magazines and art prints occupies the space between two transparent layers of tape or plastic film, which are separated by a stretcher frame. The individual objects are only visible on the painted side where the oil paint is transparent. The painted objects are selected according to the principle of maximum thematic differences. The title "goyafüralle" combines figures from the graphic series "Desastres de la Guerra" by Francisco de Goya with the current advertising slogan of the Aldi company "Gutes für alle": war inferno and consumer paradise. The principle of maximum difference is repeated in the choice of materials for the assemblage: torn aquatint etchings and Aldi bags. Spaces for contradictory interpretations are created.
The possibility of identifying the objects of the assemblage in the transparent areas of the painting refers to Jacques Derrida's theory of deconstruction. The identified objects become key concepts, influence the interpretations and change the meaning of both the painting and the assemblage. The painting functions as framing and the assemblage as a fund of the identifiable. One example of the identifiable is the lettering Toffifee, which is visible in the lower right-hand section of the object "goyafüralle IX". It stands for ambivalent childhood memories of indulgence and tooth bonding.
